Two Mountain View High School students, each with stories of determination and perseverance, received their high school diplomas during an emotional graduation ceremony on Wednesday in the Lucerne Valley Middle High School Media Center.
Riley E. Muñoz and Adriana M. Padilla were awarded their diplomas as friends, family and supporters looked on and applauded with enthusiasm. LVMHS Principal Jason Story presented the diplomas and Superintendent Peter Livingston formally accepted the graduates. Victoria Kessler, the MVHS teacher and administrative designee, greeted guests and served as the event emcee. Lori Herriman is the Alternative Education Assistant.
Following an introduction by Ms. Kessler, the commencement ceremony began with Sgt. Evan Herriman leading the Lucerne Valley Ranger Color Guard and the “Pledge of Allegiance” followed by the MVHS graduating class of winter 2023 processional. Mr. Livingston introduced the graduates, who took to the podium to share their stories. Ms. Kessler led the graduates in the traditional turning of the tassels.
Riley Muñoz said she adopted a quote as her motto: “Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.” She thanked several people for their support but especially her mother “for always believing in me.”
“She’s one of the reasons I’m standing before you today,” Riley said. “My mom shows me what a strong woman looks like.”
Last April Riley set the goal of graduating this December, but along the way she had her doubts. Getting the support of her mother, the Mountain View staff, along with her own perseverance, she endured and ultimately realized her goal. Riley is currently enrolled at Victor Valley College. Her plan is to transfer to a four-year college and graduate with a degree in psychology.
Adriana Padilla also said that there were moments of doubt and wondered if she could go on, but added, “I have a big dream. I can do anything I set my mind to.” She thanked several supporters including LVHS senior Evan Herriman who “taught me I’m my own person.”
Adriana currently is a student at VVC studying Early Childhood Development.
Following the ceremony, the LVMHS Hospitality Club served attendees chocolate and vanilla cupcakes and fruit punch.
