Livingston, Harvey, Boeing Speak at SSDA Conference

Several Lucerne Valley Unified School District administrators are presenting at the Small School District’s Association 37th Annual Conference & Trade Show currently underway in Sacramento.

SSDA CON2020 runs March 1-3.

On Monday, LVUSD Superintendent Peter Livingston and school board member Jim Harvey were joined by attorney Rex Randall Erickson, Principal Attorney of Erickson Law Firm on “The Brown Act & Who Attends Closed Session" and also discuss "Board/ Superintendent Relations and Running a Productive Governance Board."

The program provided an overview of how to discuss personnel, contractual, labor relations, legal, and other action items and discussion topics with the governing board at open meetings under the Brown Act. Topics included what matters may be discussed in closed session, how to describe topics on board agendas, and the reporting out of closed session discussions. The program also provided tips and best practices for holding board meetings without violating the law.

Also speaking at the event was Lucerne Valley Middle School Assistant Principal Kelly Boeing, who shared her expertise on the effectiveness of Social-Emotional Learning. Last September, Boeing had a blog article on Social-Emotional Learning published on the Houghton Mifflin Harcourt website. In the article, Boeing cites statistics regarding teenage depression. Social Emotional Learning, referred to as “SEL,” provides a means for helping students by providing skills for coping with everyday life.

Earlier, last June, Boeing presented at the the 2019 Model Schools Conference.
