Middle High School teacher Cindy Lazenby and Elementary School campus supervisor Sara Koons were named Employees of the Month at the September 12 regular meeting of the Lucerne Valley Unified School District’s Board of Trustees. The two were given their awards by district Superintendent Peter Livingston and congratulated by school board members.
Mrs. Lazenby, the certificated Employee of the Month, has been an integral part of the LVUSD for many years. “When our new administrative team came on board last year, it quickly became evident that Cindy is a true gatekeeper and a leader on campus,” according to Livingston, who quoted from Mrs. Lazenby’s nomination letter. “She stands at her door every period greeting every student, always making them feel welcomed.”
“Over the summer she attended a Google Summit and has helped teachers with technology questions and has been a leader in the one-to-one technology roll-out at the Middle/High School,” Mr. Livingston continued. “Additionally, Cindy piloted a program last year that has brought the option for AP courses, a wider assortment of electives options, and she has worked directly with the company to build her own courses. Furthermore, Cindy took it upon herself to make sure that Linda Schlenz (Independent teacher) and Vickie Kessler (Continuation teacher) were both trained in the new system.
“Cindy continuously goes out of her way and is always willing to help or volunteer. Although our administrative team has only known her for a year, it is obvious that she has always been dedicated and that is why she is a pillar to Lucerne Valley Unified School District. We cannot begin to thank her enough and to express our sincere gratitude for her one-of-a-kind commitment!”
A campus supervisor for Lucerne Valley Elementary School, Sara Koons was named the district’s classified employee of the month. “Sara works directly in our cafeteria when students are eating lunch. Sara has consistently looked for ways to improve the overall process for the cafeteria along with improving student behavior while in the cafeteria,” according to her commendation. “Last year Sara researched ways to help monitor student behavior in line with PBIS. Through this process our Green, Yellow, and Red cup table monitoring system was born. The cup implementation has proven to be very successful.

“This year Sara has led a brainstorming session with our staff to help improve the overall flow of the cafeteria. She recently created a few visual charts to be presented at next month’s District Facilities Meeting. All of this research is done on her own time to help make LVES a better, safer, and more successful place for students. Sara is one of the most positive, helpful, and warm people I know. We are so lucky to have her here at LVES.”
